Festival
Hue Festival is an international cultural event organized in Hue every two years to honor the priceless heritages of Hue. The first Hue Festival was called Vietnamese-French Festival and celebrated in 1992. In 2000, the festival gained its official name “Hue Festival.”
One of the biggest festivals in Vietnam, Hue Festival reconstructs the whole city with many community-based events which are organized both inside and outside of the city to rejuvenate the traditional values of Hue. Those events include The Night of the Palace, Nam Giao Worshipping Ceremony, Truyen Lo Ceremony, Ao Dai Festival, Sea Festival, Kite Competition, Human Chess, etc. The city also re-organizes many traditional festivals and recovers many traditional craft villages.
Normally, there are more than 20 Vietnamese arts companies and 20 international arts companies that participate in the festival. Thousands of artists from many places all over the world come to Hue and perform about 200 shows in as many as 40 venues throughout the city. Competitions, fairs, science conferences and exhibitions are held consecutively during the festival time, attracting millions of visitors. In 2006, there were 1.5 million domestic visitors and 150 million international visitors.
Boat race festivals
Originated from praying for rain for farmers and then it is related to praying for peace and for abundant growth of fish of many people in coastal areas in Vietnam.
- In Hue, under the Nguyen Dynasty, boat races were usually held on important occasions. Today,it was maintained and organized on the Perfume River in the Pavilion of edicts (Phu Van Lau) on the major cultural events.Before the race, all contestants attend a worshiping ceremony, offering incense. The burning incense ritual was carried out very solemnly. In the race, the participants still must comply with strict regulations. Boat races has always attracted many people to compete, observe as well as encourage because of its attracting.
Kite - Flying Festival :
- Kite-Flying is a popular folk activity in Hue. Not only the lower-class families’ children but also the upper-class people are attracted by kites of various colors and shapes.
- On festival days or event days, people flock to fly their kites. The kites are strongly carried by winds, hovering freely in the clear blue sky of Hue. They bring to the people the feeling of freedom and floating, dispel all their tiredness.There are more than 30 different kinds of kites made from the talented hands of artists.
Swing festival :The slightly daring Swing Festival is greatly beloved by the people of Hue. The swings are meticulously crafted by the skilled hands of villagers. Participants securely fasten themselves to the swings, soaring into the sky amidst the wind and sun. The winner is the one who swings the highest. This festival attracts spectators of all ages and backgrounds. If you visit Hue during Tet, you surely won't regret witnessing this spectacle.
